normal distribution

normal distribution
A *probability distribution model based on large *samples of items that cover a range of values in a *population. When plotted graphically, a normal distribution has a bell-shaped curve that is symmetrical around the *mean. The *standard deviation of the mean is used to measure fixed proportions of items in the population that vary from the mean. The normal distribution is a model, based on the so-called central limit theorem, and in practice it has been shown to more or less accurately reflect large random samples. If the sizes of adult males in a population are plotted graphically, for example, the pattern tends to approximate to the classic bell-shaped curve.
