opportunity cost

opportunity cost
The *cost arising from a decision not to pursue a course of action. Opportunity cost is often measured in terms of the *reward foregone by choosing a next best course of action. For example, if an organization purchases a productive asset for $100, the opportunity cost is calculated as the most rewarding alternative use to which the $100 could have been put. The alternative action may include investing the amount at a bank to earn *interest. See also *cost-benefit analysis.
