Outsourcing

Outsourcing
The obtaining of goods and services from an external *supplier, rather than from internal resources. The outsourcing of internal auditing services by external auditing firms grew in importance at the close of the twentieth century. Advantages of outsourcing internal auditing services include (i) access to expertise and *know-how, (ii) the flexible use of audit resources, and (iii) reductions in the size of an in-house *internal audit function. Disadvantages include (i) an organization’s dependence on its *suppliers, (ii) a loss of control to outside consultants, (iii) security risks as suppliers gain access to confidential or sensitive information, and (iv) a potential loss of collective organizational memory of audit-related areas.
