what-if analysis

what-if analysis
A form of *quantitative analysis in which assumptions are changed and the resulting outcomes compared. For example, an analysis of the potential profitability of a manufactured product can be analyzed under a range of sales scenarios - sales levels can be changed in order to illustrate the resulting effects on income. What-if analysis is a common decision-making tool, and it has been facilitated from the late twentieth century by the increasing sophistication of *spreadsheets and other computer programs.
