1. A Contractual authorization given by one party (a franchisor) to another (a franchisee) to undertake economic activity using the franchisor’s *brand name. The franchisee usually pays a *royalty for the use of the brand name. Fast-food outlets are a classic example of a franchise arrangement. 2. The granting by a government of *monopoly rights to an organization. In this context, franchising is often used for the providing of public *utilities.
